Halifax police charge man in relation to two robberies

Halifax Regional Police say they charged a man in relation to two robberies that happened this year in Halifax.

In a release, police say that on February 5, at around 8:35 a.m., officers responded to a robbery at the Hotel Halifax at 1990 Barrington Street. A man with what was believed to be a firearm came into the hotel lobby, demanded money from the reception staff, and then fled on foot with an amount of cash.

Officers arrested the man following a foot pursuit and seized a replica firearm, according to the release.

The man is also facing charges concerning a robbery on Jan. 4, 2022, at the Sobeys at 2651 Windsor Street in Halifax. Police say the man entered the store, stole merchandise, and threatened employees with a weapon before fleeing the area.

Mitchell Donald Heighton, 29, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on Feb. 6, 2023, to face charges of:
• Robbery (x2)
• Possession of weapons for dangerous purpose (x2)
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Resist arrest
• Wearing a disguise with intent
• Breach of probation (x4)
