Halifax RCMP charge Lower Sackville man with uttering threats to woman wearing a hijab

RCMP police news
LOWER SACKVILLE, NS

Halifax District RCMP have arrested a man in relation to an incident they say was motivated by hate based on religion.

On April 3, 2023, at around 12:15 p.m., RCMP responded to a report of an assault outside a public library on Sackville Drive in Lower Sackville.

RCMP says that officers learned that a man approached a woman who was wearing a hijab and threatened her after she exited the building. The 21-year-old Bedford woman was not physically injured.

After obtaining information from a witness, and examining security footage, officers located and arrested a 53-year-old Lower Sackville man believed to have been involved in the incident.

Police say that information gathered by investigators indicates that, although no assault occurred, the threats were motivated by hate based on religion.

The man was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on June 26 at 9:30 a.m. to face a charge of uttering threats.
