Amherst Police charge man with mischief and break and enter at Spring Street Academy

Police have charged 21-year-old, Drake John Wright, of no fixed address, with a series of offences following incidents on July 9 and July 10, that included a serious amount of damage at Spring Street Academy.

Wright has been charged with four counts of mischief under Section 430(4) of the Criminal Code, one count of break and enter under section 348(1) of the Criminal Code and one count of theft, under section 334(b) of the Criminal Code.

According to police, the first incident was reported at 7:15 p.m. on July 9, when the police were notified that a fire alarm had been pulled in a residential building on Crescent Avenue. The next morning at 6:30 a.m. police responded to a second report of a fire alarm being pulled at the Crescent Street location.

Shortly after that incident, police were contacted by the Amherst Fire Department, which had responded to a fire alarm being pulled at Spring Street Academy. The fire department reported that the school's sprinkler system had been activated which caused significant damage within the school.

During their investigation, police discovered that the school had been broken into and items had been stolen.

Police apprehended a suspect shortly afterwards. He has been remanded and will appear in court at a later date.
